5 Easy Ways to Refresh Your Eyes This Autumn
The days are getting darker, and our eyes can feel a little extra strained this time of year. That’s why autumn is the perfect season to give them some extra care. Just like the rest of the body, our eyes need both movement and rest to stay healthy. Here are five easy ways to refresh your gaze — and maybe even make your vision feel sharper.
1. Get the Light Right
Shorter days mean weaker light, and the contrast can make your eyes work harder, especially when reading or staring at a screen. A directed reading lamp by your sofa or desk can do wonders. Think of it as setting the stage for your eyes to relax instead of squinting.
2. The 20-20-20 Rule
You’ve probably heard it before, but it’s worth repeating: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet (about 6 meters) away for 20 seconds. It gives your eyes a tiny reset button. While you’re at it, don’t forget to blink often — especially if you’re glued to a screen. Blinking keeps the eyes moist and awake. If your eyes feel dry, a little soothing balm massaged around the temples and under the eyes can be comforting. (We love All You Need Is Me balm for that extra touch.)

- Thumb focus: Hold your thumb at arm’s length and focus on it. Then shift your gaze to something far away. Back and forth, about ten times.
- Eye circles: Close your eyes and imagine slowly drawing circles with your gaze. Five to the right, five to the left.
- Palm warming: Rub your hands until they’re warm, then gently cup them over your eyes without pressing. Breathe slowly for a minute. It’s surprisingly calming.
- Diagonal scan: Look up to the top right corner of the room, then down to the bottom left. Switch sides. Do this slowly five times.
- Window gazing: Stand by a window and focus on something outside. Then bring your focus to a small mark on the glass. Alternate about ten times.
- Figure eight: Picture a giant sideways “8” in front of you and trace it with your eyes in both directions. Great for loosening up eye movement.
4. Eat for Your Eyes
Your plate can be a vision-supporting powerhouse. Pumpkins, carrots, kale, blueberries — autumn is full of eye-friendly foods. Antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin (found in leafy greens and yellow/orange veggies) are especially important for long-term eye health. And since good skin and good eyes often go hand in hand, nourishing from both inside and outside helps. (You’ll find more skin-loving, organic formulas at True Organic of Sweden.)
5. Take Natural Breaks
Sometimes the best eye exercise is simply stepping outside. A walk among autumn trees not only soothes the soul, it also gives your eyes a rest. When your gaze settles on the horizon, the tiny eye muscles can finally relax. Fresh air included, free of charge.
Your eyes work hard for you all day. A little care, a few pauses, and they’ll thank you with sharper, calmer vision.
