A Scottish rewilding project called Rewilding Denmarkfield, led by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, has seen a 100-fold increase in bees in just two years. The area, once a mono-crop barley field with around 50 bees, has transformed into a thriving 90-acre habitat now home to over 4,000 buzzing beauties and twice as many bee species.
But the buzz doesn’t stop in Scotland. Around the globe, bee populations are on the rise:
- Global Growth: Since 1990, the number of bee colonies worldwide has increased by 47%, reaching over 101 million colonies in 2021.
- Asia’s Surge: Asia leads this growth, with a 95.7% increase in bee colonies since 1990.
- Europe’s Recovery: Europe has seen its bee colonies rise to 25.1 million, with Southern Europe alone showing an increase of 124.1%.
- Slovenia’s Commitment: Slovenia reports a flourishing bee population, thanks to strong protective measures.
- Urban Initiatives: Cities like Amsterdam are transforming public spaces into bee-friendly zones with green rooftops and pesticide bans.
